Channel-Designation Letter

Communication Cessation Letter Generator

Generate a formal, neutral letter asking a former attorney to stop direct communication except through a single designated channel — to preserve a clean evidentiary record. This is a documented preference letter, not a no-contact order. Fill in the form on the left, see the letter render live on the right, then copy or save as PDF. Self-contained, no signup, nothing leaves your browser.

Educational, not legal advice. This is a free document-generation utility provided by the Open Bankruptcy Project, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 41-5159631). The tool reproduces template language only. The content, accuracy, and use of any letter generated are solely the user's responsibility. No attorney-client relationship is created. This letter is a preference / channel-designation document — it is not a court-issued no-contact order and does not by itself prohibit any communication. Consult a licensed attorney for advice specific to your situation.

Representation Context

Drives the optional Rule 4.4(a) citation below. For any state not listed, the ABA Model Rule 4.4(a) text is used. Most states have adopted Rule 4.4 with minor variations — verify the rule text for your state at the bar's site before sending.

Date your engagement with the attorney/firm terminated (whether by withdrawal, discharge, completion, or other end-of-engagement event).

Reasons for Cessation Request

Select all that apply. Each selected reason renders a neutral, factual paragraph in the letter. If none are selected, the letter simply states a preference for written communication through the designated channel.

Designated Channel

For "Email only," put the address. For "Certified mail only," put the mailing address. For "Dropbox / shared folder," put the share link. For "writing only," this field is optional.

Reservation of Rights

Select any rights you wish to expressly reserve. Reservation language is neutral and does not threaten — it simply preserves options.

Optional Citation

If checked, the letter quotes the state-appropriate Rule 4.4(a) text. Use this option when the prior communications have been heavy-handed, harassing, or otherwise raise Rule 4.4(a) concerns. Leave unchecked to keep the letter strictly neutral.
