How to send this letter
  • Send via certified mail with return receipt requested. Keep the receipt and tracking number.
  • Send copies only of any supporting documents. Never mail originals.
  • Keep a complete copy of the letter and everything you enclosed for your own files.
  • The CRA must reinvestigate within 30 days (extendable to 45 days if you supply additional information during the investigation).
  • If the CRA fails to reinvestigate, refuses, or returns an unreasonable result, you may have a private right of action under FCRA §§ 1681n and 1681o for actual damages, statutory damages, attorney's fees, and (for willful violations) punitive damages.
  • You can dispute the same item with each CRA that is reporting it. They investigate independently.
