Agency

If known, name the agency's designated FOIA / public-records officer. Otherwise the letter is addressed generically.

Jurisdiction

Records Requested

0 / 1500

Specificity matters. Vague requests are routinely denied or stalled. Identify record types, subject matter, custodians, and time scope.

If left blank, the letter does not constrain the time scope.

Format Preference

Fees

0 / 600

Required when requesting a fee waiver. Federal FOIA waivers require a showing that disclosure is in the public interest and is not primarily in the requester's commercial interest. State frameworks vary.

Requester Category

Federal FOIA fee tiers depend on requester category. Some categories are entitled to free first-100-pages and two free hours of search.

Expedited Processing

Federal FOIA expedited processing is available when the requester demonstrates "compelling need" (5 U.S.C. § 552(a)(6)(E)). State frameworks vary; some have no expedited track.
